The IGIB Museum

Established in 1966 under CSIR, a biochemical unit at Vallabh Bhai Patel Chest Institute, led by Dr. A. P. Joshi, later evolved into the Center for Biochemicals by 1977. In 1990, IGIB expanded with its first Mall Road campus, broadening its research scope. Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari assumed leadership in 1997, propelling IGIB into functional genomics and molecular medicine.

In 1995, it became the Center for Biochemical Technology (CBT), emphasizing the translation of research into healthcare tech. In 2002, it adopted the name Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), gaining global recognition. Today, IGIB excels in genomics, notably tuberculosis research and human genomics, maintaining a legacy of scientific excellence.

In 1990, the first campus of the institute was ready for widening the scope and outreach of the scientific research that had been happening at the institute since the last 25 years of the inception of the institute. The institute continued producing restriction enzymes, oligonucleotides, and respiratory allergens under the leadership of the Dr. S. V. Gangal, first director of the institute. The institute initiated research and development activities for large scale production of biochemicals which were further transferred to industry within the country.

Evolution and Future of Biological Research
